4 Profitable Online Businesses You Can Start Today

  1. Start a personal blog

Starting a personal blog can be a fun way to get started in the world of online business. Not many people realise or respect the fact that it can also be a highly profitable online business to run. It is quite common for popular online blogs to earn 10, 20 or even 100 thousand dollars or pounds each month! See some examples here.

The best thing about starting an online blog is that it’s all about your journey. Online Profits is in fact just a personal blog. It’s my journey of being an entrepreneur, building profitable online businesses and sharing it all with the world. It’s more of a hobby to me which I really enjoy doing. And that’s the beauty of a personal blog, it’s about what you are truly passionate about which makes doing the “work” easy.

So how do you make money blogging? The most common way is through affiliate marketing. Basically, you find a product or service that you enjoy, or value and you recommend this to your audience (usually by just sharing a special link that pays commission if your audience buys). Many people understand this business model as it is essentially the same as Social Media Influencer marketing.

There are other ways you can monetise your audience such as creating online courses and the like.

  1. Start a directory website

If you are looking for a fast way to make money online, then building an online directory website is the way to go. What is a directory website? It put it simply, think Yellow Pages.

Website Directory ideas

  • You like Dogs – Start a Local Dog Minder directory website for your area
  • You like restaurants – Start a Local Restaurant review website for your area
  • You like working out – Start a Local Personal trainer directory website for your area

The possibilities are endless. In fact, one of the online businesses that I run is a global product directory website and we turn over millions each year, so it doesn’t have to be small or local.

What makes the directory website business model so good is that you can be up and running with a credible website within minutes not weeks. This is all thanks to well thought out 3rd party online directory software that makes it super easy to start.

But here is the real reason I love the directory website business model so much. Once you have built the website, you can start making money straight away. You do not have to rely on traffic to make money, just your ability to sell to business owners. All business owners want more customers so if you can convince them that your directory website will help them with that, you will make money.

The catch is you have to learn to sell. You have to be willing to pick up the phone and sell to people. For some people, this isn’t a problem for others, it is. So this is something to consider when you are thinking about the type of online business you want to start.

  1. Start an online store

When most people think about starting a profitable online business usually they think about starting online store commonly known as e-commerce. It goes without saying that starting an online store can be highly lucrative if it is successful and they can be somewhat straight forward to start. With platforms like Amazon, Ebay, Etsy etc also supporting your sales, it’s a very realistic opportunity

But it comes with a few problems.

The first one is that it can be incredibly hard to generate traffic. You are typically competing on Google, Amazon, etc against already existing stores that take the lion share of attention. However, thanks to social media, it is possible for anyone to outflank the big guys but I wanted to at least share my view to say that online stores sound easier than they actually are.

I’m sure we’ve all had visions of setting up a shop, adding some products and watching the sales come in.

Another issue with online stores is dealing with customer returns. I once ran a clothing company called Chinos 4 Men and whilst I did great in terms of generating sales, customers would often order the wrong size or not like the colour or something else. This eat away at my time and the profits of the business. If you are going to start a clothing store, be ready for a serious amount of your time to be spent on customer return related stuff.

Re-reading this I’m realising that I’m sounding a bit negative about online stores. Perhaps it’s because of the pain I went through running one or perhaps it’s because I know that the other online business models can be more fun and reliable. There are many cool things about running an online store and I think they real fun part is in the product development side. Being about to create your very own product and bring the brand to life is priceless and worth some of the hiccups you might experience running it.

  1. Make money on social media

Running a profitable social media network is in my opinion the ultimate side hustle. Is it a “real” business in the traditional sense, no not really, but it depends? For example, I know some social media platforms that employ teams of people to produce 20-25 pieces of content per day, so they are certainly real businesses.

But for most people, making money on social media is more about posting content, gaining followers or subscribers and then monetizing that audience through paid partnerships or affiliate marketing.

Starting a YouTube channel can be an obvious place to start. Much like starting a blog, it can be more of a hobby. You get to talk about things you are passionate about and get paid to do it.

Instagram is another social media channel where you can make money from however it is difficult to start from scratch and rise above the rest. I say difficult, you just need to learn the strategies behind growth and have the persistence to see it through. That is where most people fail with social media, persistence. It’s not a get rich scheme. It’s certainly not as fast as a directory website but it can be a great side profitable business to start.

There are probably many other types of profitable online businesses that I have failed to mention here but these are the ones that I have personal experience with.

If I can do this, you can do this too. That’s why I want to show you how. No excuses let’s get to work.
